Air India, a Tata group airline, has introduced Wi-Fi internet connectivity on domestic and international flights operated by select aircraft. This launch makes Air India the first Indian airline to offer on-board internet services for domestic travelers.
For a limited introductory period, passengers can enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi on domestic routes. While the exact duration of this offer remains unspecified, Air India plans to expand this service progressively across its fleet. Currently, the connectivity is available on Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, and select Airbus A321neo aircraft, equipped with the required hardware.
Air India had already offered Wi-Fi on international routes using these aircraft as part of a pilot program. The introduction of this service aligns with the airline’s ambition to rank among the world’s leading full-service carriers (FSCs), where internet connectivity has become a standard feature.
Passengers can access Wi-Fi by enabling it on their devices and selecting the “Air India Wi-Fi” network. According to Air India’s Chief Customer Experience Officer, Rajesh Dogra, “Connectivity is now an integral part of modern travel. Whether for productivity, efficiency, or real-time sharing, we are confident our guests will appreciate this enhanced travel experience.”
The rollout is facilitated by the merger with Vistara, which occurred in November 2024. Vistara, also a Tata group airline, had previously offered internet connectivity on select international flights using technology provided by Nelco, a Tata group company, in partnership with Panasonic Avionics Corporation. This infrastructure is now being utilized for Air India’s domestic services.
The Airbus A350 planes, introduced by Air India in 2024, and the former Vistara aircraft already have the specialized hardware required for on-board internet. This advancement reflects the airline’s commitment to offering modern, connected travel experiences for its passengers.
Globally, on-board internet services are a hallmark of leading FSCs, and Air India’s move positions it to compete more effectively on the international stage. The airline aims to make connectivity a standard feature for all passengers in the near future.
