Asaram Bapu Returns to Jodhpur Jail After 17-Day Parole

Jodhpur, January 2, 2025 — Rape convict and self-styled godman Asaram Bapu returned to Jodhpur Central Jail on January 1, 2025, after completing a 17-day parole, which had been granted starting December 18, 2024. The parole allowed Asaram to receive medical treatment in Pune while he continues to serve a life sentence for the 2013 sexual assault of a teenage disciple.

Asaram’s return to jail was mandated by the Rajasthan High Court, which had set a deadline for his surrender by 5 p.m. on January 2, 2025. His parole period included 15 days for medical care and 2 days for travel. Asaram complied with the court’s orders, surrendering a day earlier on January 1 to avoid contempt of court.

The self-proclaimed godman is currently seeking suspension of his life sentence, citing serious health issues. His legal team has petitioned the Supreme Court, asking for an interim release, though the Gujarat High Court had previously rejected the request in August 2024.

Asaram was convicted in 2018 for the rape of a 16-year-old female disciple at his ashram near Surat, Gujarat, in August 2013. The case remains a high-profile matter with ongoing legal battles, as his supporters and detractors continue to debate his fate.
