Bombay HC Allows AIIMS PG Aspirant to Join Counselling After Missed Flight

Court Grants Relief to Kalyani Chakrawar, Medical Aspirant, to Join AIIMS PG Counselling

Nagpur, January 3, 2025: The Bombay High Court has intervened in favor of Kalyani Chakrawar, a 27-year-old medical aspirant, allowing her to join the AIIMS Kalyani Postgraduate (PG) counselling process despite missing the December 24 deadline due to a missed flight. Chakrawar, who ranked 119th in the national rankings, had applied for a seat in general medicine, but was initially denied participation after she failed to report to the counselling center on time.

The aspiring doctor explained that her delay was a result of unavoidable circumstances, specifically a missed flight that caused her to miss the crucial deadline for joining the AIIMS counselling process. Given the nature of her situation, Chakrawar approached the Bombay High Court with a plea for relief. The court heard her case in an emergency session on December 31, 2024, and after reviewing the circumstances, ruled that her case was exceptional and warranted special consideration.

In its ruling, the court expressed understanding of the difficulties faced by Chakrawar and highlighted the importance of ensuring fair opportunities for deserving candidates. The High Court’s decision enables Chakrawar to now take part in the ongoing AIIMS Kalyani counselling process, offering her a chance to secure a place in the prestigious medical institution.

This move has been hailed as a positive example of judicial intervention to support candidates in exceptional circumstances, ensuring that no deserving student is deprived of educational opportunities due to unforeseen events. Chakrawar’s case was treated as an outlier, with the court recognizing that missing a flight due to reasons beyond an individual’s control should not lead to the forfeiture of academic aspirations.

With the court’s ruling, Chakrawar can now proceed with her medical career, hoping to take her place in the competitive PG programme. The AIIMS Kalyani counselling process is set to continue, and the relief granted to Chakrawar ensures that she will not miss out on the chance to pursue her dreams in medicine.
