Prayagraj, 1st January 2025 — With only 12 days remaining before the start of Mahakumbh-2025, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, authorities have heightened security measures in Prayagraj after a threatening post was discovered on social media. The post warned of a blast targeting the Mahakumbh Mela, scheduled to begin on January 13 at the Sangam. Following the alarming message, the Mela police quickly registered an FIR and launched an investigation to identify the individual behind the post.
The FIR, filed under sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with Section 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act, focuses on the individual who allegedly uploaded the social media post. According to officials, the post contained derogatory comments directed at a specific community and made a direct threat to the safety of Mahakumbh attendees, stating that a bomb would be used to kill at least 1,000 devotees during the event.
In response to the growing concern, joint teams from the Mela police and the cybercrime wing have been tasked with tracing the origin of the post. Senior Superintendent of Police (Kumbh Mela), Rajesh Dwivedi, confirmed the registration of the FIR and assured that swift action is being taken to investigate the matter. He emphasized that the authorities are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the devotees attending the Mahakumbh, which is expected to draw millions of people from across the world.
The Mahakumbh is a highly significant event for Hindus, where devotees gather at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarasvati rivers for a sacred dip. The Mela, known for its massive scale, attracts pilgrims, tourists, and religious leaders, making security a top priority for the authorities every year.
While the investigation into the threatening post continues, security forces are bolstering their presence in Prayagraj and around the Mela grounds. Authorities are also working closely with social media platforms to trace the individual responsible for spreading the threat.
