The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has allocated ₹20 crore to renovate 300 of the 392 operational Amma canteens. These canteens, which have been a key part of affordable public dining since their launch in 2013, are facing challenges, including declining footfalls and revenues. The renovation plans include repairing ceilings, painting, replacing old electrical appliances, and providing new utensils.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, measures will be taken to address issues of food mismanagement. The renovations, which will be managed by three contractors, will span across the city’s North, Central, and South zones.
