New Delhi: In a meticulously planned and executed operation, an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 Globemaster successfully air-dropped 18 MARCO (Marine Commandos) personnel along with two raiding craft boats near the Somali coast to rescue 17 crew members of a merchant vessel from pirates. The mission, led by Wing Commander Akshay Saxena, lasted 10 hours and was conducted under low-light conditions, showcasing the exceptional skill, bravery, and operational readiness of India’s armed forces.

A High-Risk, High-Precision Operation

The Somali coast, notorious for pirate activity, became the site of an urgent distress call when a merchant vessel’s 17-member crew was taken hostage by pirates. India’s response was swift, deploying its special forces unit, MARCOs, trained for maritime counterterrorism and high-risk extractions.

Wing Commander Akshay Saxena, who has been honored with the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), piloted the C-17 Globemaster, a strategic military transport aircraft capable of long-range operations. The mission required precise coordination as the aircraft:
