A devastating fire broke out in Tandi village, located in the Banjar subdivision of Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, on Wednesday, destroying around 20 houses, along with fodder and cow sheds. The inferno, which began in a fodder shed, quickly spread due to strong winds and the highly flammable wooden construction of the homes.
Banjar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Pankaj Sharma estimated the loss to be approximately ₹10 crore. Among the damaged properties were ornaments and sacred items stored in the ‘kothi’ (storehouse) of deity Gadpati Sheshnag, adding a cultural and emotional dimension to the tragedy. Thankfully, no human casualties or livestock losses were reported.
Fire tenders from Banjar, Largi, and Kullu rushed to the scene to combat the blaze, but as of the latest update, the flames were not fully extinguished. Meanwhile, the district administration is providing immediate relief, including food and temporary shelters for affected families. Tents will be set up if necessary, according to the SDM.
Fire Risks in Kullu
Kullu has experienced multiple fire disasters in recent years, attributed largely to the region’s traditional ‘Kath-Kuni’ architecture—wooden houses constructed close together. These structures, while culturally significant, are particularly vulnerable to fire.
The Kullu District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is taking measures to mitigate such risks, including identifying remote villages for constructing RCC and prefabricated tanks. These tanks, connected to pipelines and fire hydrants, aim to provide a reliable water supply for firefighting in areas with limited road access.
Plans are also underway to install large water tanks in densely populated areas and locations with traditional wooden homes. This infrastructure is expected to enhance fire preparedness in the region.
The tragedy in Tandi village highlights the urgent need for fire safety measures, especially in areas where traditional architecture and rural infrastructure increase the risk of catastrophic fires.
