No Need to Panic Over HMPV Outbreak: Health Services DG Assures Public

In response to the growing concerns surrounding the outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, Dr. Atul Goyal, India’s Director General of Health Services, has reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for panic. The respiratory virus, known for causing flu-like symptoms, particularly in the elderly and young children, has led to heightened awareness, but Dr. Goyal emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored.

According to Dr. Goyal, HMPV is a common respiratory virus that generally causes mild illness similar to the flu, including cough, fever, and nasal congestion. He clarified that although the virus can be severe for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, there have been no significant cases reported in India for the year 2024.

The Health Services DG emphasized that India’s healthcare system is well-equipped to handle seasonal respiratory infections, and hospitals across the country have been prepared for such outbreaks. He further reassured citizens that public health measures and regular hygiene practices, such as handwashing and wearing masks in crowded places, remain the best defense against flu-like illnesses, including HMPV.

The virus has primarily been a concern in China, where an uptick in cases has been recorded, raising alarm among neighboring countries. However, Dr. Goyal highlighted that there is no evidence suggesting a widespread threat to India at present. The government has ramped up surveillance to detect any unusual patterns of respiratory illness, but there has been no alarming increase in cases.

As the winter season progresses, respiratory illnesses typically see a rise in incidence, but Dr. Goyal emphasized that the public should not panic. Instead, individuals should remain vigilant and take common-sense precautions to protect themselves, especially those in high-risk categories such as young children and the elderly.

With the pandemic experience still fresh in the public’s mind, the Ministry of Health continues to monitor global health trends and assures that the situation is under control. The public is urged to stay informed through official channels and follow preventive measures to avoid unnecessary fear.
