Centre Approves ₹54,000 Crore for Indigenous Military Hardware to Boost Defence Sector

Defence Acquisition Council Clears Major Capital Acquisition Proposals; New Guidelines Introduced for Faster Procurement

In a strategic boost to the Indian defence sector, the Centre has approved proposals worth ₹54,000 crore for acquiring India-made military hardware. The decision was taken by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, underlining the government’s commitment to self-reliance in defence.

These proposals are aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces while promoting indigenous defence manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The approved capital acquisition will cover a range of military equipment including advanced weapon systems, platforms, and surveillance gear tailored to India’s strategic needs.

Significantly, the Defence Acquisition Council also approved new guidelines to streamline and reduce timelines in the capital acquisition process. The reforms are designed to make the procurement cycle faster, more effective, and efficient, ensuring timely delivery of crucial defence equipment to the forces.

The focus of these acquisitions will be on products developed and manufactured by Indian companies, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. The push for local sourcing is expected to generate employment, enhance technology development, and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

A large portion of the ₹54,000 crore will be invested in procuring artillery systems, armoured vehicles, naval vessels, and communication systems, all from Indian defence firms. This step is seen as a crucial move to strengthen national security and modernize India’s military infrastructure.

The approved guidelines emphasize digitization, transparency, and accountability in procurement. Key reforms include simplified procedures, fixed timelines for each acquisition phase, and enhanced collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and Indian industry.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the move, stating that the decisions taken will “empower the Indian armed forces while giving a robust push to domestic defence production and innovation.”

This initiative is part of India’s broader defence policy aimed at becoming a global hub for defence manufacturing. The ₹54,000 crore investment is expected to significantly increase the operational readiness of the Indian military.

Industry experts have welcomed the DAC’s approval, citing it as a step towards creating a self-reliant defence ecosystem capable of meeting both domestic and export demands.

Further details about specific contracts and vendors involved will be released in due course, as the procurement process moves into its next phase under the newly approved accelerated guidelines.
