Union Government Sanctions ₹522.34 Crore Flood Relief Package for Tamil Nadu

After repeated requests, the Union Government sanctions ₹522.34 crore to Tamil Nadu for addressing damages from recent floods.

In a significant move, the Union Government has approved ₹522.34 crore as financial assistance to Tamil Nadu for flood relief. The decision comes after the state witnessed extensive damage due to torrential rains and flooding in late 2024 and early 2025.

Tamil Nadu’s Repeated Appeals Bear Fruit

The Tamil Nadu government had consistently urged the Centre to release funds under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). The state reported widespread agricultural losses, damaged infrastructure, and displaced populations in multiple districts including Chennai, Cuddalore, and Thanjavur.

Centre Finally Responds to State’s Demands

The sanctioned ₹522.34 crore will be used to provide compensation to affected families, rebuild public infrastructure, and support livelihood restoration. The decision follows an inter-ministerial team’s visit to assess the on-ground situation.

Political Friction Over Delay

The delay in releasing aid had sparked tensions, with the Tamil Nadu government accusing the Centre of indifference towards the state’s suffering. This allocation is expected to ease the strain between the two administrations, though some leaders call it “too little, too late.”

Focus on Rehabilitation and Recovery

With the aid finally released, Tamil Nadu is expected to expedite relief and rehabilitation efforts, particularly in rural areas where homes, roads, and farmlands were severely affected. The funds will also support the rebuilding of essential public services like water supply and health infrastructure.

Relief to Farmers and Affected Families

The state will prioritize compensation to farmers, many of whom lost their standing crops due to floods. Families who lost homes or suffered injuries during the disaster will also receive targeted support under the relief plan.
