In a bold political move, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin skipped the grand inauguration of India’s first vertical lift sea bridge in Pamban, an event headlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Stalin’s absence comes amid growing concerns from southern states about the upcoming delimitation exercise based on future population data.
CM Stalin Raises Alarm on Delimitation
Stalin has demanded a formal guarantee from the Centre ensuring fair representation for southern states, especially Tamil Nadu, in the upcoming delimitation process. The exercise, expected after the next census, could significantly affect Lok Sabha seat distribution and resource allocation, potentially penalizing states that have successfully implemented population control.
Symbolic Political Statement
The decision to skip a high-profile event where PM Modi inaugurated the ₹8,300 crore Pamban rail and road infrastructure projects was seen as a symbolic protest by the DMK-led government. Though invitations were extended, Stalin’s absence signaled Tamil Nadu’s discontent with the lack of commitment from the Centre on this key issue.
A senior DMK leader stated, “Why should states that managed their population growth be punished with fewer seats in Parliament? We demand constitutional protection.”
Centre’s Silence on Delimitation Worries Southern States
The issue of delimitation has become increasingly sensitive in southern India, where states fear a reduction in political influence due to slower population growth compared to the North. Stalin, along with other southern leaders, has urged the Modi government to rethink the formula and ensure that representation remains equitable.
Pamban Bridge Inauguration Overshadowed
The Pamban Sea Bridge, a major engineering feat, was meant to highlight BJP’s developmental push in Tamil Nadu. However, the absence of the Chief Minister and his pointed demands diverted attention from the celebratory tone of the event.
