CBSE Mandates 75% Minimum Attendance for Class 10 and 12 Board Exams

Board exam eligibility now linked to regular school attendance, says CBSE in new directive

New Delhi | August 7, 2025

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made it mandatory for all Class 10 and Class 12 students to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance during the 2024–25 academic session to be eligible to appear for the board exams in 2025.

🎓 Rule Aimed at Strengthening Academic Discipline

The CBSE clarified that this rule reinforces consistent classroom participation and improves academic outcomes. Students falling short of the required attendance will not be allowed to appear in the final board examinations unless their absence is due to genuine medical or exceptional reasons, duly verified and approved by school authorities and CBSE.

🏫 Applies to All CBSE-Affiliated Institutions

All CBSE-affiliated schools across India and abroad must strictly monitor and maintain updated attendance records. Schools have been instructed to regularly inform parents about students’ attendance status and ensure corrective measures are taken if a student’s attendance falls below the prescribed limit.

📑 Exceptions Under Strict Review

While the board may consider exemptions in cases like chronic illness, physical disabilities, or participation in national/international sports and cultural events, such cases must be supported by documentary evidence and prior approval from CBSE regional offices.

📌 Attendance Cut-Off Timeline

The board has directed schools to finalize and upload attendance records by January 2025, allowing CBSE sufficient time to review any exemption requests before admit cards are issued for board exams.

📣 Final Warning for Students and Parents

CBSE has advised students and parents to track attendance proactively. The board emphasized that the 75% attendance rule is non-negotiable for regular candidates. Schools must not send ineligible students’ names for board exam registration under any circumstance.

✅ Key Highlights:

  • Minimum 75% attendance mandatory for Class 10 and 12 students.

  • Applicable for 2024–25 academic session across all CBSE schools.

  • Exemptions allowed only for valid medical or official reasons.

  • Schools must submit final attendance data by January 2025.
