Ahmedabad Launches Major Demolition Drive: Over 8,000 Illegal Structures Around Chandola Lake Removed

Phase 2 of the encroachment crackdown at Chandola Lake begins with heavy police deployment and over 40 bulldozers in action.

Phase 2 Demolition Drive Begins at Chandola Lake

In a massive anti-encroachment operation, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched Phase 2 of its crackdown around Chandola Lake, targeting over 8,000 illegal structures. The action comes amid growing concerns over lake pollution, blocked drainage systems, and unlawful construction in ecologically sensitive zones.

The operation began early morning with the deployment of 3,000+ police personnel and over 40 bulldozers.

3-Day Operation Underway With High Security

The operation is scheduled to continue for three days, covering large swathes of illegal settlements that have cropped up around the Chandola Lake catchment area. The civic body has mapped encroachments using drone surveys and satellite images.

Officials have stated that the move is in line with environmental protection policies and lake preservation efforts.

Massive Police Force Ensures Law and Order

To avoid unrest during the operation, the Ahmedabad Police Department has mobilized over 3,000 officers, including Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Special Operations Group (SOG). Security is being closely monitored, with riot control units on standby.

Residents were given prior notice to evacuate voluntarily before the demolition began.

Environmental Concerns and Civic Response

The demolition drive is part of a larger civic campaign to revive and protect urban water bodies. Chandola Lake, once a major ecological asset, has suffered due to years of encroachment, resulting in pollution and disruption of its natural flow.

AMC officials emphasized that clearing the illegal structures is crucial for upcoming lake rejuvenation projects and urban drainage improvement plans.

Displaced Families Seek Rehabilitation

Several affected families have appealed to the authorities for relocation assistance and compensation. NGOs and activists have demanded that the government provide alternative housing under housing-for-all schemes and ensure children’s access to education and healthcare post-eviction.

Officials said relief measures would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Previous Crackdown and Public Reaction

The first phase of the crackdown, conducted earlier this year, removed over 5,000 structures. Public opinion remains divided—while many support the city’s attempt to restore natural water bodies, others criticize the lack of structured rehabilitation for the poor.

City administrators maintain that the drive is essential for flood prevention and urban planning goals.

What’s Next for Chandola Lake?

Post-demolition, the AMC plans to fence off critical lake zones, plant native greenery, and install waste treatment mechanisms to prevent further encroachment and pollution.

Urban planners view this as a crucial step toward reviving Ahmedabad’s lakes and integrating them into sustainable development frameworks.
