In a major move to promote business and economic activity, the Assam government has approved 24/7 shop operations in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar. This decision was taken during a recent cabinet meeting, where it was resolved that all commercial establishments can now operate round-the-clock in these key urban centers.
The decision, however, specifically excludes liquor shops and bars, which will continue to follow regulated hours. The Assam cabinet emphasized that this initiative is aimed at enhancing economic opportunities, generating employment, and offering flexibility to businesses, especially in sectors like retail, food services, and logistics.
Officials clarified that worker rights and welfare will be strictly monitored, and shop owners must ensure compliance with labour laws. Adequate rest, wages, and safety provisions must be provided for employees working in extended hours.
The move is expected to particularly benefit night-time commerce, attract investment, and cater to both local residents and tourists. With Guwahati being a major commercial hub, and Dibrugarh and Silchar rapidly developing, the policy could significantly boost regional economic growth.
In addition to this major announcement, the Assam cabinet also took several key decisions, including initiating plans to develop Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital. This strategic step aims to decentralize administration and promote balanced regional development across the state.
Infrastructure upgrades were also greenlit, with focus on roads, public utilities, and healthcare systems in multiple districts. A set of health initiatives was introduced, including enhancing primary health centers (PHCs), expanding medical staff, and improving rural health outreach programs.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence that these reforms would create a business-friendly environment and uplift public services, marking a new phase in Assam’s development agenda.
The 24/7 shop operations will initially be implemented in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar, and may be expanded to other cities based on outcomes. Local authorities have been instructed to ensure law and order, traffic management, and public safety during night-time operations.
This initiative aligns with the broader goal of making Assam a $75 billion economy, encouraging entrepreneurship, and creating a vibrant business ecosystem across the state.
