Bengaluru, June 4, 2025:
A tragic stampede unfolded near M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday night during celebrations of RCB’s (Royal Challengers Bangalore) victory, leaving 7 people dead, including several women and children.
The incident occurred when thousands of fans gathered in jubilation to mark RCB’s long-awaited win in the Indian Premier League (IPL). What began as a festive gathering turned into chaos as overcrowding spiraled out of control near one of the stadium’s major exit routes.
Initial reports suggest that the stampede began when a portion of the crowd surged forward to get closer to the team bus. The lack of proper barricading, inadequate lighting, and insufficient police deployment added to the mayhem.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but for several victims, it was too late. The deceased were rushed to nearby government hospitals, and at least 20 others sustained injuries, with several reported to be in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as terrifying.
“There was no space to breathe. People fell on each other. No help came for several minutes,” said a fan who managed to escape with minor injuries.
Local authorities have ordered a high-level investigation into the incident. Bengaluru Police Commissioner confirmed that crowd management protocols were not adequately followed.
The state government has announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased.
“We are deeply saddened. A celebration turned into mourning. We will ensure accountability,” stated a senior Karnataka government official.
Security experts and urban planners have long warned about crowd mismanagement around the Chinnaswamy Stadium, especially during high-profile cricket events. Despite repeated advisories, proper exit routes, signage, and emergency deployment often remain inadequate.
This tragedy has reignited the debate on public safety during mass gatherings in urban centers. Activists have demanded stricter enforcement of event safety guidelines and criminal accountability for lapses.
Meanwhile, RCB franchise management expressed deep sorrow.
“We are heartbroken by the incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” the team said in a public statement.
Grief-stricken families gathered at hospitals, with many demanding immediate action against those responsible. City officials are coordinating with law enforcement to manage the aftermath and avoid further panic.
As the city mourns the loss, tributes pour in from across the nation. The celebration of victory has been marred by sorrow, reminding all of the importance of crowd safety and responsible event management.
