Security Restrictions Tighten Over Delhi’s Airspace Amid Threat Concerns
New Delhi, August 3, 2025 — Ahead of India’s 78th Independence Day celebrations, the Delhi Police have issued a prohibitory order banning the use of sub-conventional aerial platforms across the National Capital Territory.
The order, issued under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), came into effect from July 22 and will remain in force until August 16, 2025. This is part of a comprehensive security arrangement to safeguard high-risk areas, including the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the nation.
Devices Banned Under the Order
The directive restricts any unauthorized use of the following devices:
-
Drones
-
Paragliders
-
Paramotors
-
Hang-gliders
-
Hot air balloons
-
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
-
Microlight aircraft
-
Any other similar flying objects
Justification for the Ban
According to the Delhi Police Commissioner’s office, the restriction has been imposed due to credible intelligence inputs indicating potential threats from terrorist organizations and anti-social elements who might use such platforms to disrupt national celebrations.
Authorities cited past instances and growing misuse of aerial surveillance and drone technology in conflict areas as serious cause for concern.
Red Fort Declared a No-Fly Zone
The Red Fort, the focal point of the August 15 ceremony, has been declared a no-fly zone. Surveillance has been heightened, with Delhi Police, Central Armed Police Forces, and National Security Guard (NSG) teams already stationed at strategic locations.
Snipers, high-definition CCTV systems, and drone detection equipment have been deployed around Rajpath, India Gate, and Lal Qila.
Punishment for Violations
Strict penalties are in place for violators. The order mentions that flying any aerial object in violation of the ban will be deemed a punishable offence under IPC sections and the Aircraft Act. Police will take immediate legal action without prior notice.
Civic Cooperation Requested
The Delhi Police has urged the public, especially residents near central Delhi, to cooperate with the security arrangements. Commercial drone operators, event organizers, and photography services have also been advised to suspend aerial operations until August 16, 2025.
Surveillance and Intelligence Measures Intensified
In addition to the aerial restrictions, intelligence coordination between multiple agencies including RAW, IB, and Delhi Police Special Cell has been significantly increased. Advanced drone radar and jamming equipment have been installed to detect and neutralize any suspicious aerial movements.
Enhanced Airspace Security a New Normal?
Security analysts believe that such bans may become a recurring norm due to the increased use of aerial devices in unlawful surveillance and attacks globally.
According to security expert Rajiv Sinha, “The threat matrix now includes airborne threats at a very local level. Restricting airspace around national events is a necessary preventive strategy.”
Final Word
With Independence Day 2025 less than two weeks away, the Delhi Police’s proactive aerial platform ban underscores India’s evolving approach to urban and national security. Authorities remain on high alert to ensure peaceful celebrations and a threat-free environment for dignitaries and citizens alike.
