In a deeply disturbing incident, Jain monks were physically attacked in Neemuch district, located near the Rajasthan-Madhya Pradesh border, after allegedly refusing money to a group of inebriated men. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from religious communities and civil society.

Incident Occurred During Monks’ Stay at Hanuman Temple

The monks were reportedly staying at a Hanuman temple in a nearby village when the altercation occurred. Late at night, a group of six men, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, approached the monks and demanded money. Upon refusal, the men turned violent and attacked the monks.

Police Respond Swiftly, Arrest 6 Accused

Following the incident, local police acted promptly, arresting six individuals involved in the assault. The accused are now being investigated under multiple sections of the IPC, including charges of attempted murder, religious desecration, and assault on monks.

Massive Protests and City Shutdown in Response

The violence triggered large-scale protests across the region. Local Jain communities, supported by other religious and social organizations, observed a complete bandh (shutdown) in Neemuch and nearby towns to demand justice for the attacked monks and stronger protections for ascetics.

Religious Leaders Demand Strict Legal Action

Prominent Jain leaders and organizations have urged the government to take stringent action against the accused and ensure the safety of monks traveling across the country. Many have stressed the need for special protection laws for religious ascetics and monks.

MP and Rajasthan Authorities Collaborate

Since the village is close to Rajasthan, the governments of both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have initiated joint coordination to ensure peace and prevent the situation from escalating. Increased police presence and patrolling have been ordered in sensitive areas.

Condemnation from Political and Religious Circles

Senior leaders from various political parties and religious organizations have condemned the act, calling it a shameful assault on India’s spiritual heritage. They called for restoring communal harmony and reinforcing safety measures for monks and pilgrims.

Monks Recovering Under Medical Supervision

The assaulted monks have been shifted to a local government hospital, where they are currently receiving medical care. Doctors report that while their injuries are not life-threatening, the trauma suffered is mentally distressing.

Growing Concern Over Safety of Ascetics

This incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of monks and spiritual travelers, especially those who rely on public goodwill and lead lives of detachment. Several religious communities are planning to submit memorandums to the Home Ministry for better protection laws.
