Kolkata to Phase Out 1,500 Yellow Taxis by End of 2025

Kolkata, January 4, 2025 – In a significant move, around 1,500 iconic yellow taxis in Kolkata will be phased out by the end of 2025 due to an age restriction on commercial vehicles. As per the new policy, commercial vehicles older than 15 years will no longer be allowed to ply in the city. This move has come as part of the state’s efforts to comply with environmental regulations and modernize the public transport system.

Impact on Yellow Taxi Fleet

Currently, there are about 4,500 Ambassador metered yellow taxis operating in the state. By the end of 2026, this number is expected to be reduced to approximately 3,000 as more vehicles exceed the 15-year age limit. The iconic yellow taxis, which have been a staple of Kolkata’s transportation landscape for decades, will gradually be replaced by newer, more eco-friendly alternatives.

Taxi Unions’ Concerns

Taxi unions, which represent thousands of drivers, have expressed concerns over the phasing out of the older yellow taxis. They have called for a revival package from the state government to ensure that taxi operators are not financially burdened by the transition. Many drivers fear a loss of livelihood as their aging vehicles are decommissioned, and they urge the government to provide financial support or subsidies for purchasing new vehicles.

Government’s Plans

The state transport department is aware of the challenges faced by taxi operators and has announced that a meeting will be held soon with taxi unions to discuss possible solutions and support measures. The government is expected to explore options such as low-interest loans, financial aid, or incentives for upgrading vehicles to mitigate the impact on workers and operators.

Environmental and Modernization Efforts

The phased out vehicles are expected to be replaced with more environmentally friendly options, in line with the city’s plans to reduce air pollution and modernize its public transport fleet. This change is expected to contribute to cleaner air and improve the overall transportation infrastructure in Kolkata.
