Marina Beach to Shine with ₹10 Crore Heritage Makeover
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has launched a transformative ₹10 crore project to restore and beautify the Marina Beach promenade from Lighthouse to Island Grounds. This stretch, one of Chennai’s most iconic, will be revitalized to highlight its historic structures and improve the pedestrian experience.
🏗️ Focus on Illuminating Iconic Heritage Landmarks
The project includes lighting and restoring several heritage buildings such as the University of Madras, Senate House, Presidency College, PWD Building, Ice House (Vivekanandar Illam), and the Oriental Research Institute. The intention is to enhance their nighttime visibility and preserve their rich architectural history.
🌟 Sculpture Gardens and Glow Zones to Enhance Aesthetics
In the first phase, glow gardens, sculpture zones, fountain plazas, and open gathering spaces will be introduced along the beachside. These additions aim to turn the Marina into a cultural hotspot, boosting both tourism and local engagement.
🧭 Accessibility Improvements in Seven Zones
The promenade will be developed in seven zones, each planned to eliminate accessibility issues. This includes leveling of uneven pavements, safer pedestrian crossings, and street furniture that respects the city’s heritage aesthetic.
🧱 Balancing Urban Upgrade with Historical Conservation
Unlike previous efforts that mainly focused on the seafront, this project equally emphasizes the landward side of the Marina. The goal is to provide a harmonious blend of modern urban design and cultural preservation, allowing residents and visitors to explore Chennai’s rich past in a refreshing, interactive way.
🗓️ Project Timeline and Execution Plan
The CMDA has scheduled the tender bidding process for May 7. Once work begins, the entire project is expected to be completed within 10 months. Quick execution is a top priority to reduce public inconvenience and maximize impact before the next tourist season.
🚦 Expected Benefits of the Marina Revamp
The makeover will improve walkability, promote heritage tourism, enhance public safety, and give the Marina a unique identity. With proper lighting, restored facades, and newly developed recreational spaces, this stretch is set to become a landmark of pride for the city.
