Union government under PM Narendra Modi provides significantly higher central funding to Tamil Nadu, citing focus on equitable development and transparency.

Tamil Nadu Received 3 Times More Central Funds Than INDI Bloc States: Modi Govt

In a strong political and developmental signal, the Modi government has stated that Tamil Nadu received three times more funds from the Centre than several states ruled by the INDI alliance. This revelation underscores the BJP-led government’s emphasis on inclusive development, irrespective of political affiliations.

Focus on Development, Not Politics

As per official statements, the Union Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently prioritized infrastructure, healthcare, education, and welfare schemes in Tamil Nadu, allocating funds that outpace allocations to INDI alliance-governed states.

The total central assistance to Tamil Nadu saw a substantial increase during the 2024–25 fiscal year, supporting major projects across urban and rural sectors. The government emphasized its non-discriminatory policy towards opposition-ruled states.

Boosting Key Sectors

The extra funds helped boost major sectors like:

  • Road and Highway Development

  • Metro Rail expansion in Chennai

  • Smart Cities Mission

  • Ayushman Bharat and Health Infrastructure

  • PM Awas Yojana (Housing Projects)

Government officials highlighted that ₹1.5 lakh crore+ worth of Union-backed investments were being implemented across Tamil Nadu, a figure more than three times the average allocation to INDI bloc states.

Strategic Focus on Southern India

Experts believe this move aligns with PM Modi’s southern strategy ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. By highlighting the financial support given to Tamil Nadu, the Centre aims to showcase efficient governance and cooperative federalism.

Modi recently stated, “Tamil Nadu’s development is our priority. Political colour does not decide who gets help—people’s needs do.”

Opposition Response

Leaders from the INDI alliance termed the statement as “politically timed,” citing alleged delays in fund disbursal. However, data shared by the Finance Ministry reportedly supports the Centre’s claims.
