Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has launched a major initiative to support school-going students by distributing free bicycles across the state. The program, rolled out in multiple districts this week, is aimed at improving student attendance and access to education, especially in rural and tribal areas.
The scheme is part of the government’s broader push to encourage school retention, reduce dropouts, and promote girl child education. Thousands of students across Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Ujjain, and Rewa have already received their new bicycles under this scheme.
Speaking at a public event in Sehore district, CM Mohan Yadav said, “No student should be forced to leave school because of the lack of transport. These bicycles are a tool of empowerment, especially for our daughters and rural students.”
The scheme benefits students studying in Class 6 to Class 10 in government schools. The program includes boys and girls, with a special focus on ensuring girls in distant villages have safe and convenient travel to school.
The Chief Minister also announced that starting next month (August 2025), the state government will begin free scooty distribution to meritorious students, especially those in higher secondary classes and college-going girls.
“We are working towards a future where every child has access to education without hurdles. In August, we will distribute free electric scooties to our top-performing students. This will support higher education and ease mobility for young women,” Mohan Yadav said.
The government aims to distribute around 10,000 scooties in the first phase, prioritizing girls from economically weaker sections, students from SC/ST and OBC categories, and those scoring high marks in their Class 12 board exams.
The scooty initiative is part of the “Ladli Laxmi Yojana 2.0” and the “Smart Girl Mobility Mission”, two schemes designed to incentivize education and support female empowerment in the state.
Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar, present at the event, noted that improving student transportation will lead to measurable improvements in school attendance, exam participation, and overall academic performance.
District education officers have been instructed to ensure transparent distribution, with digital registration, Aadhaar verification, and GPS tagging of bicycles and scooties to prevent misuse.
The program is backed by a state budget allocation of ₹150 crore, and it reflects the government’s intention to focus on youth development, accessibility, and gender equity in education.
Local communities and school management committees have widely welcomed the move. Rukmini Chauhan, a Class 9 student from Betul, said, “This bicycle will save me 4 kilometers of walking every day. I can now focus more on studies and reach school safely.”
The upcoming Scooty Yojana is also expected to support college enrolment among rural girls, many of whom face mobility issues after completing secondary school.
The Chief Minister concluded by saying that education is not just about classrooms, but also about creating the conditions in which every child can dream, learn, and achieve.
With such inclusive initiatives, Madhya Pradesh is setting an example for student welfare and gender-sensitive governance.
