MTC Introduces Smart Travel Card for Cashless Ticketing in Buses and Metro

Chennai: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) unveiled the Singara Chennai Travel Card on January 6, 2025, offering commuters a seamless and cashless way to purchase tickets for public transport. The initiative, launched by Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar, aims to simplify travel for residents and tourists alike.

The smart card, developed under the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) framework, enables hassle-free travel in buses and metro trains not just in Chennai but across India. This all-in-one travel card is part of a nationwide initiative to promote cashless and integrated ticketing for public transportation systems.

According to MTC officials, the card is equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure quick and secure transactions. Commuters can recharge the card online or at designated recharge centers, and it can be used for contactless payments in both buses and metro trains.

Minister S.S. Sivasankar emphasized the government’s commitment to improving public transport infrastructure and enhancing the commuter experience. “The Singara Chennai Travel Card is a step towards modernizing our transport system and making it more convenient for the public. This initiative aligns with the vision of a smarter and more sustainable Chennai,” he said.

The launch has been met with positive responses from commuters, who believe it will save time and reduce the need for carrying cash. The MTC has also announced plans to integrate the card with other modes of transport, including suburban trains, in the near future.

This landmark initiative marks a significant shift toward digitization in public transport, aligning Chennai with global cities that have adopted similar systems to enhance connectivity and commuter convenience.
