Baikuntha Nath Sarangi under scrutiny after Vigilance raids uncover illegal cash stashed across 7 locations

Vigilance Recovers ₹2.1 Crore in Raid on Odisha Chief Engineer

In a major anti-corruption crackdown, the Vigilance Department of Odisha recovered around ₹2.1 crore in unaccounted cash during simultaneous raids at seven locations connected to Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, the Chief Engineer of the Rural Development Department.

Cash Found Hidden Across Multiple Locations

The early-morning raids were conducted across Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and other areas, targeting Sarangi’s residences, office, and suspected hideouts. Officials were stunned to find bundles of ₹500 currency notes hidden in cupboards, beds, and even false ceilings.

Shocking Attempt to Destroy Evidence

In a dramatic turn, Sarangi reportedly tried to throw bundles of ₹500 notes out of the window of his flat upon learning about the raid. However, vigilance officers stationed outside immediately recovered the thrown cash.

A senior vigilance officer stated:

“This was an attempt to destroy evidence. Luckily, we were stationed on all sides.”

Massive Operation Against Illegal Wealth

Officials estimate the seized cash may be only a portion of the total undisclosed wealth. The raids also uncovered property documents, gold ornaments, and other luxury items which are currently being evaluated.

Sarangi Under Scanner for Disproportionate Assets

Preliminary investigations suggest that Sarangi’s assets are vastly disproportionate to his known sources of income. A formal case has been registered, and detailed assessment of movable and immovable assets is underway.

Public Reaction and Administrative Response

The shocking visuals of cash being hurled from a high-rise apartment have gone viral on social media, triggering public outrage. The State Government has promised strict action if Sarangi is found guilty.

Call for Systemic Reforms

The incident has reignited calls for better transparency and stricter checks within state departments. Anti-corruption activists have urged authorities to widen the probe and examine other officials associated with project allocations and tenders.

Next Steps in Investigation

Vigilance officials are preparing a detailed report to be submitted to higher authorities. Sarangi is likely to be summoned for questioning and may face suspension pending investigation. If proven guilty, he could be charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Conclusion

The Odisha Vigilance raid has once again highlighted the deep-rooted issue of corruption in public departments. The recovery of ₹2.1 crore in just one day indicates a larger nexus that demands immediate and transparent investigation.
