Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced strict enforcement under Operation Kalanemi, declaring that strong legal action will be taken against any individual or group that attempts to hurt religious sentiments or spread misinformation in the name of religion.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday evening, CM Dhami emphasized that the state government will not tolerate anti-religious activities, especially those aimed at creating social unrest or disharmony in the region.
“Anyone who tries to hurt religious beliefs, deceive people, or insult our traditions will face consequences under the law. Operation Kalanemi is designed to identify and stop such elements,” said Dhami.
The operation, initiated in 2024, has gained momentum after multiple complaints of fraudulent religious conversions, hate propaganda, and misuse of religious platforms surfaced in several districts, including Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Dehradun.
Authorities have been directed to increase surveillance, intelligence gathering, and swift response to any religion-related disturbances. Local police units are working in coordination with intelligence agencies to track online and offline networks spreading misinformation.
According to senior officials from the Uttarakhand Home Department, Operation Kalanemi is not targeted at any one community but is instead a neutral mechanism focused on protecting constitutional values and spiritual traditions.
“Misleading people under the guise of religion is an act of betrayal to both faith and the nation. We are committed to preserving harmony and ensuring the truth prevails,” said a senior state official.
The operation’s name—‘Kalanemi’—is derived from a mythological demon known for deceit and illusion, reflecting the mission’s goal to expose and act against those who hide behind false religious pretenses.
CM Dhami also encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities, assuring complete confidentiality and safety for whistleblowers. The government has activated 24/7 helplines and digital reporting systems for public convenience.
In recent weeks, authorities have taken action in multiple cases involving manipulative religious conversions, provocative speeches, and unauthorized gatherings. More than 50 individuals are currently under investigation, with legal proceedings already initiated in 15 cases.
The Chief Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to safeguarding India’s spiritual heritage, adding that preserving the Sanatan culture and lawful co-existence among faiths is a shared responsibility.
This announcement has been welcomed by various religious and civic organizations. Leaders from Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities have expressed support, stating that true religious practice should never involve deception or hatred.
Social analysts view Operation Kalanemi as a decisive step in controlling radical narratives and ensuring law and order in a spiritually sensitive state like Uttarakhand, which draws millions of pilgrims annually to sites such as Kedarnath, Badrinath, Haridwar, and Rishikesh.
As the state continues to promote spiritual tourism and religious heritage, CM Dhami has assured that Operation Kalanemi will work in the background to ensure faith and peace are preserved.
