Supreme Court Issues Notice in Shahi Idgah Case, Will Examine ASI Protection

In a key development in the Shahi Idgah-Krishna Janmabhoomi dispute, the Supreme Court has issued notice on an appeal filed by the Hindu side challenging the protected status of the site.

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday issued a formal notice to all parties involved in the Shahi Idgah-Krishna Janmabhoomi dispute. The court said it would examine whether the Shahi Idgah mosque, located adjacent to the Krishna Janmasthan Temple in Mathura, qualifies for protection under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Hindu Side Challenges Protected Status

The appeal was filed by the Hindu petitioners, who questioned the ASI-protected monument tag of the Shahi Idgah structure. According to them, the site has historical and religious significance connected to Lord Krishna’s birthplace, and the mosque should not fall under heritage protection that restricts further excavation or investigation.

What the Supreme Court Said

A bench led by the Chief Justice of India acknowledged the sensitivity of the matter and stated that the ASI protection status must be reviewed before proceeding further. The court will now hear arguments to determine if the status is valid or requires revision.

Background of the Dispute

The Shahi Idgah mosque and the Krishna Janmabhoomi share a boundary in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. The Hindu side claims the mosque was built after destroying a part of a Krishna temple centuries ago, drawing parallels with the Ayodhya Ram Mandir case. The case has been closely watched due to its national significance.

Next Hearing Scheduled Soon

The court directed responses to be filed by the Centre, the ASI, and other respondents. The next hearing is expected in the coming weeks. Legal experts say the court’s decision could influence other similar religious disputes in India.

Security and Public Sentiment

Authorities in Mathura and surrounding areas have increased security measures in light of the sensitive nature of the case. Public interest remains high, with both communities closely following the developments.
