Tamil Nadu: Jallikattu Season Begins with Enthusiasm
Thachankurichi, Pudukkottai, January 4, 2025: The much-awaited Jallikattu season has officially begun in Tamil Nadu, with the first event of 2025 taking place at Thachankurichi village in Pudukkottai district. The traditional bull-taming sport, a hallmark of the Pongal festivities, witnessed an electrifying start as villagers gathered in large numbers to celebrate their cultural heritage.
Event Highlights:
A total of 459 bulls and 236 tamers participated in the event, showcasing the bravery and skill of the tamers and the strength of the bulls.
Around 4,500 spectators attended, cheering enthusiastically as the tamers showcased their mettle.
Sreedhar from Madurai emerged as the star of the day, taming 12 bulls and earning the coveted “Best Bull-Tamer” title along with a Pulsar bike as a prize.
Unique Participants:
Adding to the event’s inclusivity, a 10-member team led by transgender bull owner Viji also participated, drawing appreciation for breaking barriers and celebrating unity through tradition.
Safety and Injuries:
Despite the vibrant atmosphere, the event witnessed 23 tamers and nine spectators sustaining injuries during the proceedings. Medical teams were on standby to provide immediate assistance, ensuring safety measures were in place.
Organizers and Officials:
The event was organized by the Don Bosco Youth Forum, adhering to government guidelines to ensure safety for participants and spectators alike. Local officials supervised the event to maintain discipline and uphold the tradition’s integrity.
