The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issued a directive urging all schools across the country to support children and parents in completing the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) of Aadhaar. The updates are required when a child turns 5 years old and again at 15 years old, ensuring that biometric data reflects accurate identity records.
Purpose of Aadhaar MBU
UIDAI clarified that MBU is crucial for keeping Aadhaar details accurate as children grow. Since fingerprints and iris patterns change during childhood, updating these biometrics ensures smooth use of Aadhaar for school admissions, scholarships, health benefits, and welfare schemes.
Schools’ Role in the Process
The circular emphasizes that schools should inform parents in advance, guide them to Aadhaar Seva Kendras, and help children complete updates without delay. UIDAI stated that Aadhaar-linked services might face authentication issues if MBUs are not completed on time.
Biometric Updates at Age 5 and 15
Children initially receive Aadhaar using demographic details and facial photographs. At age 5, fingerprints and iris scans are captured for the first time. At age 15, a second update records more stable biometrics, which remain valid for adulthood. UIDAI confirmed that these updates are free of cost at Aadhaar Seva Kendras.
Avoiding Authentication Errors
UIDAI stressed that without MBU, children may face difficulties in availing benefits linked to Aadhaar, such as PM Poshan (Mid-Day Meal), scholarships, Ayushman Bharat healthcare schemes, and direct benefit transfers. Accurate biometric data also prevents duplication and fraud in service delivery.
Aadhaar as a Foundation of Digital India
With more than 1.39 billion Aadhaar holders, UIDAI highlighted that Aadhaar is the backbone of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure. Timely MBU for children strengthens the credibility of Aadhaar in delivering education, healthcare, and financial inclusion.
Simplified Process for Parents
UIDAI assured parents that the update process is hassle-free and free of charge. Parents only need to carry the child’s Aadhaar card and one valid ID proof. The update can be completed at Aadhaar Seva Kendras, Common Service Centres, or mobile update camps.
Previous Awareness Drives
Earlier, UIDAI had launched several awareness campaigns to inform parents about MBU. However, delays were observed due to lack of coordination. This time, UIDAI has made schools central partners in ensuring compliance, particularly at the time of admissions and annual verifications.
Long-Term Benefits of MBU
The authority explained that accurate Aadhaar data will make future processes, including college admissions, passport issuance, and banking services, much smoother. Ensuring timely updates now prevents complications in adulthood.
National Importance
UIDAI officials said the directive is part of India’s broader push for efficient governance through digital identity systems. With schools acting as a bridge, MBU coverage is expected to improve significantly before the next academic session.
