New Delhi – The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was tabled for discussion in Lok Sabha, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserting the government’s commitment to democratic reforms in parliamentary procedures.
During the debate, Amit Shah took a strong stance against opposition criticism, emphasizing that the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) under the current government functions transparently and deliberates on key legislative matters.
Amit Shah Takes a Dig at Opposition
Addressing the opposition’s concerns, Amit Shah remarked, “It was your insistence that a Joint Parliamentary Committee should be formed. Unlike previous governments, we have a democratic committee that brainstorms and makes necessary amendments. During the Congress era, committees merely endorsed decisions without debate.”
His statement aimed at contrasting the current government’s approach with past parliamentary practices, asserting that all legislative proposals undergo thorough discussions before approval.
Proposed Amendments in the Waqf Bill
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill seeks to introduce changes in the existing law, addressing concerns regarding Waqf property management, dispute resolution, and transparency in land dealings. Lawmakers argue that the amendments will streamline governance and prevent legal conflicts related to Waqf properties.
Government sources indicate that the proposed changes are aimed at ensuring better oversight and preventing misuse of properties under Waqf boards across the country.
Opposition Raises Concerns
Opposition leaders questioned the need for amendments, arguing that the current provisions adequately address Waqf property issues. Some members also raised concerns about potential encroachments and legal ambiguities surrounding the bill.
Despite differences, government officials assured that all viewpoints would be considered before the bill is passed.
Lok Sabha Debate Continues
As discussions progress, lawmakers from various parties continue to put forth their perspectives on the bill’s implications. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is expected to be voted on in the coming days, following further deliberations.
With Amit Shah defending the government’s legislative approach, the debate highlights the evolving nature of parliamentary proceedings and the push for greater transparency in lawmaking.
